Hell in the Bible

Greetings, and as mentioned in an earlier post, the subject of ‘hell’ in the scriptures will now be covered. I certainly hope the next subject/post will be a little more spiritual and uplifting but ‘hell’, ‘death’ and ‘suffering’ all need to be properly understood and it is necessary that they have their share of attention.

In the Old Testament the Hebrew word “sheol” has been translated in our bibles ‘grave’ (31 times), ‘hell (31 times) and ‘the pit’ (3 times). It literally means “the unseen”, and as was pointed out  under the post of  “Death”, it is where the soul returns when a person dies…..that is, having no  consciousness, just as it was before  the person was born.

The Greek equivalent of sheol in the New Testament is ‘hades’ and it is translated ‘hell’ (10 times) and ‘grave’ (1 time). Likewise, it means ‘the unseen’, where the soul goes at death.

The Post on “Lazarus And The Rich Man” covers the “soul” and its relation to “hell” quite thoroughly.

In the New Testament the word ‘ghenna’ is also translated ‘hell’ (12 times). It is actually not a true Greek word and refers to a place of loathing and abhorrence southwest of Jerusalem.  It is used in Matthew 5:28 and Matthew 10:28 and refers to a place where, in the millennium, the bodies of transgressors will be thrown AFTER they have been slain for sins worthy of death. The soul is never said to  enter there nor is it said  the soul suffers torment there.

Another Greek word translated as ‘hell’ in the New Testament is ‘tartarus’ (1 time). It is a place where the sinning, heavenly messengers are kept until the day of judgment.  2 Peter 2:4

Finally, we need to better understand ‘The Lake of Fire’ in its relation to death and suffering.

Twice it is used indicating a place where  Satan, the Wild Beast and the False Prophet are placed……to be tormented day and night for the eons of the eons (Rev 20:10).  These are superhuman beings, not ordinary humans, and are the only 3 who are said to suffer in this way.

And then in Rev. 20:14,15 and Rev. 21:8 after the White Throne Judgment, all those not found in the Book of Life are thrown into the Lake of Fire with the Second Death and the Unseen. We have already covered that ‘Death” is a cessation of conscious life and those designated to be here because of their sins with have no awareness of their surroundings as they are in the Second Death……they quite literally have died and this is a repetition of the first death.

The good news is that there will be a time , after the eon or age following the White Throne  Judgment, when even Death itself will be abolished and it will NO LONGER hold ANY HUMAN in its state of being.  This is covered under several Posts, mainly: “All Creation Will Be Saved” and “God’s Eonian Plan and The Present Secret Administration”.

Take care.

Death

Greetings!

In the Scriptures we are told that at death “the spirit returns to God Who gave it” (Ecc.12:7), the “body returns to the soil” (Gen.3:19), and “the soul returns to the unseen [sheol or hades]” (Psa.9:17; Acts 2:27,31).

Quite simply, we become as we were before we were born, that is, having no conscious existence ( Psa 6:5, Psa. 146:4, Ecc. 9:5)  The Bible refers to it many times as being a “sleep” (Psa 13:3, 1 Corinthians 7:39,  15:6, 15:20, 15:51, etc. ). Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Martha, was also said to be asleep, Jesus Himself, when he died; and, then He said He was going to “awake” him. (John 11:11….Young’s Literal)

In Acts 7:59-60, Stephen is acknowledged to have had his spirit return to God (where it was before he was born) and then he “fell asleep” (Darby, Rotherham’s and Young’s translations) and also in 1Corinthians 11:30 (Young’s). Again, reference John 3:13.

You might want to also reference the Post on “Lazarus  and the Rich Man”.

Later, we will cover ‘hell’….it, too, is so misunderstood.

Take care.

Who Is A Saint?

Hey, there…..there are so many scriptures in the New Testament that identify ANY person who is called by God to be a believer as a ‘saint’. One example is Ephesians 1:1 (Rotherham’s Emphasised Bible, Concordant Literal New Testament, Young’s Literal Translation, American Standard Version, etc, etc.)and there are numerous others:

Acts 9:13, Acts 26:10, Romans 1:7. 2 Corinthians 1:1, Philippians 1:1, Colossians  1:2, etc.

You don’t have to croak/kick-the-bucket/die and have mortal men decide whether you are/were  a ‘saint’ or not……it is a free gift, by grace,  in faith because of the sacrifice of Christ Jesus.

Catch you later.

Mark 8:33

Greetings!

“Now Jesus, being turned about and perceiving His disciples, rebukes Peter and is saying, “Go behind Me, satan! for you are not disposed to that which is of God but that which is of men.”

Peter certainly meant well, but here, he was clueless and sinning. This shows how subtly Satan works…..making us think what we say or do is perfectly right when, in fact,  it can actually be  directly opposed to God. This reinforces the truth that we MUST be looking to God and Christ at ALL times, yearning with our spirit  that They will not let us be snared by the ways of the Adversary.

I remember reading in one of William Law’s books ( I can’t recall which….maybe it was THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT) that we receive our motivation and influence DIRECTLY and INTERNALLY  from ONE of just  3 sources: God and Christ, our own selves or Satan and his demons  (other humans cannot directly gain access  into our being but can only address us from without).  Now this is scary!  Certainly we cannot be trusted to rely on our own logic or judgment but in the most basic of human ways; and, avoiding the influence of Satan and the demons is a given. The obvious choice then is God and Christ.

Mr. Law’s remedy was to consciously look to God and Christ each moment for Them to show us what to do and say.  This sounds radical but it is so true.  Paul tells us we need to reach the point where  we bring “EVERY THOUGHT” into the obedience of Christ Jesus …2 Corinthians 10:5.  This was the one common thread among  all the ‘mystics’ that I read about: that regardless of their denomination…..they looked to God and Christ continuously, without ceasing…literally, moment by moment.   Mr. Law is said to have also reached this disposition , and describes it as too wonderful for words to convey (paraphrasing).

The mystics were those who reached that ‘union’ with God and Christ whereby they experienced Their presence with them pretty much all the  time….many having visions, others… indescribable  revelations of the nature of God and so on.  Actually, all Christians should  be mystics, ideally.

Until later, take care.

Eon vs Forever

It is so unfortunate that one single word has been so mistranslated by ‘scholars’ that  wonderful truths have been  HIDDEN from God’s saints. The word I speak of in the Greek  (New Testament) is  ‘aion’ and the corresponding Hebrew (Old Terstament) word is ‘olam’.  A Greek-English lexicon would define ‘aion’ as “An indefinite, long period of time; an age.”

For whatever their individual reasons many, if not most,  translators have rendered this simple, little word as everything from ‘world’  to ‘eternal’, forever’, ‘always’, ‘everlasting’, and so on.

If they had just PROPERLY TRANSLATED IT CONSISTENTLY, as several versions such as Rotherham’s Emphasized Bible,  Young’s Literal Translation and the Concordant Literal Version  have done, we Christians would EASILY see that God has a ‘purpose of the eons’ (Ephesians 3:11), there was a time ‘before times eonian’ (2 Timothy 1:9), that Christ made the eons (Hebrews 1:1-2), there are eons to come (Ephesians 2:7) and there is a ‘conclusion of the eons’ (Hebrews 9:26).

In fact, there is no word in Hebrew or Greek that literally  means ‘eternal’ with the sense of time. When God is referred to as the ‘eonian God’ in Romans 16:26 it obviously means He  is working with His plan using the eons, just as  His being the God of Israel does not limit Him to just Israel.

There is NO “eternal punishment” (New American Standard and many others) but there is “EONIAN (age-abiding) chastisement”. Matthew 25:46 (Concordant Literal NT and Rotherham’s Bible). It is for a limited time.

There is NO “penalty of eternal/everlasting destruction” (New American Standard and many other versions) but there is “AGE-ABIDING/EONIAN destruction/extermination”. 2 Thessalonians 1:9 (Concordant Literal NT and Rotherham’s Bible). It is for a limited time.

The point being: where ever you read “eternal”, “forever”, “everlasting”, etc. in those Bibles that incorrectly translate “aion”, just substitute “eon” or “age”.

An excellent book fully and wonderfully explaining the eons in Scripture is Adlai Loudy’s GOD’S EONIAN PURPOSE and you can read it free online at http://wwww.theheraldofgodsgrace.org/Library.htm (YES…there is a 4 wwww there and it will not go through if you use the standard 3 www.). It can also be purchased at Amazon.com.

Until later.
